Real Madrid legend wishes to prolong his career until the age of 40

After close to a decade of dominance, Real Madrid’s world-class midfield trifecta of Luka Modric, Casemiro and Toni Kroos has been broken this summer.

Casemiro, after spending nine years at the club and winning 18 trophies, has joined Manchester United, bringing an end to his time at the Bernabeu. His departure comes as a huge blow, even though Los Blancos have a replacement ready in summer signing Aurelien Tchouameni.

Soon, the Merengues could also bid goodbye to Toni Kroos, whose current contract with the club expires next year and he is yet to start talks over a renewal.

However, according to Diario AS, Real Madrid can continue to count upon the services of Modric for a few more years as the Croatian midfielder wishes to continue playing until the age of 40.

The former Tottenham midfielder will soon be turning 37 but continues to be one of Real Madrid’s most important players, as was visible this past weekend against Celta Vigo when he scored a wondergoal and set Vinicius Junior up with a sensational pass.

Modric was cheered and given a rousing ovation by home and away fans at the Balaidos after being taken off on Saturday night. Manager Carlo Ancelotti praised the ageing midfielder saying: “Luka is immortal. He is always ready, always prepared, and always very good. His goal changed the game.”

Modric signed a one-year contract extension with the Spanish and European champions earlier this year to prolong his stay until 2023. But if he continues to perform the way he is, the ongoing campaign will not be his last in the whites of Real Madrid.

The veteran midfielder has previously insisted that he plans to continue playing until 40 and as per the report, Los Blancos would be happy to continue with him if he keeps up with his performance levels.

“With Luka there will never be a problem if the idea of both parties is to continue together. He is amazing. In his demanding position on the pitch, at Modric’s age, no one is still in the football elite,” is the message that Real Madrid are transmitting.

So, if things go well, Real Madrid supporters will continue to see the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner dazzle and weave his magic for a few more years.
