Raphael Varane heading for the exit
As widely reported yesterday, Raphael Varane is set to follow Sergio Ramos out of the Spanish capital this summer, with Real Madrid agreeing a deal with Manchester United for the French defender.
David Ornstein, of The Athletic, reports that the deal will net Real Madrid 34 million pounds plus add ons, with Varane to sign a four year deal with the option for an extra year.
With just one year left on his deal in Madrid, the Spanish club were never in a strong bargaining position, and many on social media have raised eyebrows when it comes to the price that United have managed to negotiate for the World Cup winner.
Manchester United may have to wait for the deal to be announced, however, with Varane required to quarantine in the UK before interacting with others.
Real Madrid not signing a replacement
While Varane and Ramos have both left the club this summer, according to reports Real Madrid have no intention of strengthening further at centre-back this summer. They have, of course, signed David Alaba on a free transfer earlier in the window, but have since lost two defenders.
As per Lucas Navarrete of SBnation, however, there will be no more defensive incomings, reporting that:
“Alaba, Militao, Nacho and either one of Vallejo, Chust or Gila will be the teams centrebacks this season”
Will this be enough to help Madrid return to the top?
Odegaard keen on a return to Arsenal
There could well be another departure from Madrid this summer, with Martin Odegaard thought to be keen on a return to Arsenal. The Norwegian midfielder spent the second half of the 2020-21 campaign in north London, and Mikel Arteta is thought to be keen on bringing him back this summer.
According to MadristaReal, Odegaard is also keen on the reunion, saying that:
“Odegaard’s dream was to succeed at Real Madrid, but he is thinking of returning to Arsenal. Neither the player nor the club have ruled out his departure.”
With Real Madrid seemingly desperate to raise funds to overhaul their side, could Odegaard be on the way out
