The aim is clear. Real Madrid want Bellingham to be more than just a goalscorer and stat padder. They want his influence to shape the entire match. That is why Xabi Alonso plans to use him as the main playmaker, the role that helped him finish third in the Ballon d’Or voting under Carlo Ancelotti.
There will be less room for Bellingham to make late runs because the Mbappé-Vinícius pairing will occupy the front line. Even so, he is expected to be decisive in a difficult road environment. He will be supported by a three-man midfield, just like in Athens in midweek, where that setup unlocked the strike duo. Vinícius was the most dangerous creator with two assists, while Mbappé was the most lethal finisher with four goals. Alonso now wants Jude to complete what he sees as a winning formula.
Madrid’s midfield puzzle
Valverde and Tchouaméni will provide the main protection. The third piece is the big question, with the staff weighing the creativity of Arda Güler or the power of Eduardo Camavinga. The more likely option is Valverde on the right side of the midfield and Tchouaméni as the anchor. The real debate is whether to add Guler’s spark or Camavinga’s physical edge.
The decision is also influenced by the schedule, with a trip to San Mames coming up, Madrid’s final major road test before the home stretch. Alonso also views Girona away as a chance to strengthen the chemistry between Arda and Bellingham.
Major questions in defense
Most of the uncertainty is at the back, a unit that has lacked consistency because of injuries. Alonso expects to get Militão and Rüdiger back, along with Courtois and Mastantuono, whose groin issue has improved. The biggest concern is Asensio, who missed training the day before the match because of a virus.
Madrid’s possible starting XI
Carreras is expected to return at left back, although it would not be a surprise if Alonso experiments again. He has already used 12 different defensive combinations this season. Trent Alexander Arnold will start on the right as he continues adjusting to Madrid’s system and offering solutions with his passing range.
A likely lineup looks like this: Courtois; Trent, Militão, Rüdiger or Asensio; Carreras; Valverde, Tchouaméni, Camavinga or Güler; Bellingham; Mbappé and Vinícius. As always, though, Alonso could spring a surprise.
