The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) have reportedly admitted that referee Anthony Taylor was wrong to move Manchester United's wall further back for Lucas Digne's free-kick in their 3-1 defeat by Aston Villa last month.
Digne put Villa 2-0 up after just 11 minutes in Unai Emery's first game in charge of the club on November 6, with United perplexed over why their wall for the set-piece was pushed further back than the usual 10 yards.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United were able to access the audio interaction between Taylor and the players, given how the referee was miked up for the game.
One of the conversations in question was between Christian Eriksen and Taylor, with the Danish midfielder informing the match official that United wall was too far back but was 'tersely ignored', the report claims.
The report also goes on the state that United officials contacted PGMOL Select Group 1 Manager Jon Moss, who agreed that Taylor was incorrect to put the wall so far back and insisted he would be spoken to over the incident.
Taylor, 44, who is originally from Cheshire, has not refereed a Premier League game since taking charge of United's 3-1 defeat against Villa at Villa Park.
And while he has taken charge of two World Cup games in that time – Ghana's 3-2 win over South Korea and a goalless draw between Croatia and Belgium – the PGMOL chiefs have decided to put him in charge of United's Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest tonight.
After the defeat at Villa Park, United manager Erik ten Hag said: 'I think the free-kick is stoppable because the wall is too far.
'Okay, a small detail but details make the difference in top football. It tells everything from us because we were not fresh.'
United are currently fifth with 26 points but have two games in hand over fourth-place Tottenham, who are four points ahead of them.
It is United's first Premier League game back since the World Cup, with their last outing in the league seeing them beat Fulham 2-1 last month.

Well, they said the same when a foul was played against Erikson in the Arsenal derby. It should have been still 3-2. Football is not predicted like that. The lower the lead, the more determined the opponent.
Either way a lost is a lost. VAR is there and yet again it’s a human interpretation that’s needed to decide if to notify the referee. All this means what? Unless at the end of the season they tally up which referee was just simply awful making mistakes that definitely caused major outcomes and they are demoted to the lower leagues then all this is simply hogwas.

What difference does it make now? Even if you remove the goal would have lost 2-1 then. United was outplayed and out hustled in that game. United continue to lost the exact same way to teams that are managed by Spanish managers.

Recently, have to admit he has been enunciated with costly errors. He was so poor yesterday between Arsenal and Villa. He ignored important fouls and at some point it seem there was no moderator. He is distracted in games. He nearly gave away a pen against Vila in the first half until VAR intervened.
And yet they thought he was the best from the EPL to officiate matches in the World Cup. 🤦🏽♂️

then what was the penalty for the wrong that leads to a goal. "NOTHING" yet he's referring another match of the same team.

I'm a Liverpool supporter but I'm not surprised at all, I watched that match as well I saw it well that it was 12 or 13 yards. When is Martin Taylor and Paul Tierney being sacked or sent to league 2?

Of what use is this report for are they going to deduct the point from villa current point or share the three point among the two teams which is impossible. Referees should be cautioned on the kind of decisions they make while on pitch to avoid this kind of issues.
