Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger has learnt his fate for throwing ice at the referee during Real Madrid's dramatic Copa del Rey final defeat.
The former Chelsea defender and Real team-mate Lucas Vazquez, who had both been substituted, were both shown straight red cards for angrily reacting to a foul given against Kylian Mbappe shortly before the final whistle.
Jules Kounde scored in the 116th minute to seal victory and Barcelona's 32nd Copa del Rey title in the El Clasico at Seville's La Cartuja stadium.
Rudiger, who moved to the Bernabeu in 2022, had to be restrained by Ferland Mendy and a Madrid staff member when the official approached to send him off.
He could be seen insulting the referee, with some reports claiming the defender said 'you're a miscarriage' and 'son of a wh***'.
Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea said in his report that Rudiger, 32, was dismissed for 'throwing an object from the technical area, which missed me'.
And, as a consequence, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), have slapped the Germany defender with a six-game suspension 'for minor violence against the referees'.
Rudiger had apologised for the incident, saying there was 'definitely no excuse' for his behaviour.
All six games of Rudiger's suspension will be served in league matches, meaning that it will extend until the first game of next season.
Real Madrid are pushing hard to retain their domestic title — and trail leaders Barcelona by four points. However, Rudiger's ban will not affect their title push as the defender had already been ruled out for the season with a serious knee injury.
Rudiger underwent surgery on Tuesday and Spanish media reports that he could be out between six and eight weeks, which would rule him out of the rest of the domestic season and make a doubt for the Club World Cup, which starts on June 15.
In a post on social media, Rudiger said he had been playing in pain for more than seven months and that surgery was unavoidable.
'Now I'm finally pain-free again, and the surgery was a success. Thanks to the medical team,' he said.
'[There are] two big tournaments with the Nations League and the Club World Cup in front of me, but I have to look from week to week. I will do everything I can to make it happen.'

Well deserved, we must do better as a team and show good examples to smaller teams like our growing younger brother Barca and the little one Arsenal

He is supposed to start serving the suspension when he's fit to play. Not when he's injured. How's that a punishment?

how's that a punishment? suspending someone who's already injured and out of the remaining season. meaning, anytime Madrid plays a match, it will be counted even though he wouldn't have played anyway?
If Rüdiger moves **from Real Madrid to another La Liga club (like Atlético Madrid)**, his six-game suspension would carry over, and he’d have to serve the remaining ban with his new team. If he transfers **to a club outside Spain (e.g., Borussia Dortmund in Germany)**, the suspension would **not** apply in the Bundesliga or other competitions (like the Champions League), as domestic bans are usually enforced only within the same league system. However, if he ever returns to La Liga, the remaining suspension 👨would still be active. **Exception**: If the incident occurred in an international match (e.g., Champions League), UEFA could enforce the ban across competitions. But since this is a domestic RFEF punishment, it’s limited to La Liga. **In short**: - **Stays in La Liga (e.g., Atlético)**: Ban continues. - **Moves abroad (e.g., BVB)**: No suspension unless he returns to Spain.

It wasn’t held by Mendy and that could be later on. It was the coaching staff.

The punishment is lenient for the despicable act he perpetrated. If he were from another team I’m sure it would have been more than the six games

Lewandowski got a 1 match red card (second yellow) extended to three games for rubbing his nose while near the touchline, not facing the referee. I’ve seen Vinicius get a straight red card, gone up into the referee’s face, had to be held back by teammates and get a 2 match ban.
