The Spanish dressing room couldn't believe the news when they heard of Robert Moreno's dismissal.
They never doubted the words and tears of the coach, but they never thought it'd end as it did.
Luis Enrique's name had been floating around on Monday ahead of their game with Romania, but everyone was confident that Moreno would stick around until the end of the European Championship next summer.
"Lucho isn't coming," some affirmed, but nobody knew what Luis Rubiales was doing.
The official communication of everything came on Tuesday morning.
Everyone left the Wanda Metropolitano on Monday night knowing what was happening, but official confirmation was missing.
Luis Rubiales phoned his two captains - Sergio Ramos and Sergio Busquets - and then another important player in the squad, but until then the players only knew what was happening through the press.
They had been kept in isolation all day on Monday. Despite focusing on the job at hand, they knew that it seemed as though Moreno's stay on the bench was set to end.
The squad tried to isolate themselves from the storm surrounding them and play as though they knew nothing, but it wasn't easy.
Moreno had a great relationship with the dressing room. If there were no issues with Luis Enrique, there was a complete understanding with his successor, making the transition as seamless as it was.
Luis Rubiales himself acknowledged that things went very well, and he also explained that after all of the details behind the latest change were explained to him, they were also willing to move forward.
Naturally, though, they'd have liked it to be handled differently.
What was a huge surprise for the players was Moreno's reaction. He had been calm throughout the day, but that changed in an instant.
"They've tossed me aside, they've tossed me aside, they've left me thrown aside," he shouted as he came into the dressing room teary-eyed, before wishing his players luck in the draw and in the European Championship.
Moreno didn't want to listen to anyone though. When he was told to go to his press conference his response was simple: "you've tossed me aside", despite being told that UEFA demanded his presence.
He didn't return to Las Rozas, where he was expected to sleep. He didn't attend the meeting on Tuesday morning either, instead sending his lawyers.
