Ronaldo Nazário recently disclosed details that led to his departure from Barcelona in 1997. The Brazilian striker spent only one season at Camp Nou. In an interview, he stated that he was very happy at Barcelona and had even reached a contract renewal agreement with the club, but Barcelona suddenly reversed its position, ultimately ending their relationship.
"I was very happy at Barcelona. My agent was there, and eventually we reached an agreement. They called me and said: 'Listen, we have reached an agreement. You will stay and sign a new contract at Barcelona. We are very happy, and Barcelona is also very happy,'" the former star explained.
However, the situation changed completely days later. According to Ronaldo's account, three days after that call, Barcelona reversed course and opened the door for his departure: "Three days later, they called me and said: 'Listen, we can't sign this contract with you anymore. If you have the opportunity to leave, just bring the money to pay the buyout clause, and then you can leave.'"
Ronaldo stated that he was deeply disappointed by the club's reversal and decided to seek a way out. "I told them: 'Listen, I don't want to stay at Barcelona anymore, because these people don't keep their word. So I want to leave,'" Ronaldo said.
Ultimately, Serie A side Inter Milan showed interest in the striker and paid his buyout clause. "Inter Milan came. They paid Barcelona—I remember it was about 40 million euros at the time, which was a huge sum. So I went to Inter Milan."
This deal made Ronaldo one of the standout stories of the 1997 transfer window. The Brazilian striker, who joined Barcelona from PSV Eindhoven, made an impact on Spanish football in just one season.

Fool How is that cheat They have there reasons for nor agreeing to the deal which opens the door for another club. If you are old enough then, you will know there is more story to this than what he claims. You cant sign for a club and as for renewal after just 1good successful season you performed incredibly well. If barca agree to it, he might ask for another renewal the following season. Every renewal comes with improved salary
