Ronaldo is relegated and Benzema will be IMPOSSIBLE to replace... 10 THINGS WE LEARNED from LaLiga

La Liga finished on Sunday with Ronaldo’s Real Valladolid relegated, and the pride of Pamplona, Osasuna, in Europe.

Heading into the last game of the campaign, six clubs knew they could still drop through the dreaded trap door with the fates of Elche and Espanyol already confirmed.

Despite dominating their game against Getafe with 79 per cent possession and 15 shots to their opponent's four, Valladolid couldn't find a breakthrough as the game finished 0-0 and their fate was sealed.

Elsewhere, there were emotionally goodbyes for Karim Benzema and Joaquin and a not so emotional one for Eden Hazard.

Here, Mail Sport looks at ten things we learned from the final round of matches of the season in Spain.

Ronaldo is under pressure after Valladolid relegation

Valladolid fans were filled with optimism when legend Ronaldo Nazario took over their club in 2018 but they have been relegated to the second tier twice since then.

It’s hard to see what he did wrong. The club signed well in January with Kyle Larin arriving to score eight goals. He also made a bold managerial change with Paulo Pezzolano coming in.

The Uruguayan had already been earmarked to take over next season and the change was brought forward with the club struggling. He won two of his first three in charge but then lost five on the bounce and down they go.

The Valladolid president will give a press conference on Monday with ‘Ronaldo go now’ chants from last night still ringing in his ears.

The aim was to get Valladolid into Europe but they have travelled in the wrong direction once more.

Greatness beckons for Celta starlet Gabri Veiga

The 21-year-old has interested a host of clubs including Newcastle and Real Madrid.

Anyone put off by his €40m (£34.5m) release clause will have taken note of his performance on Sunday.

Celta Vigo needed to beat champions Barcelona to secure top flight football for another season and his brilliant brace helped them do it.

He was in tears when he scored, and on the final whistle. He may well be off but what a parting gift.

Retiring Joaquin will be missed

He cried a river before, during and after Betis’ last game of the season.

Joaquin finishes with a record 622 appearances – only former Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta can match that.

He’ll become coach, director of football or even president. But first he can enjoy the break – and his 42nd birthday this summer.

Osasuna deservedly go marching into Europe

Two seasons ago Osasuna coach Jagoba Arasate went 13 games without a win but his position was never questioned.

He has repaid that faith several times over and this season the club from Pamplona reached the Spanish Cup final and finished seventh to get themselves in the Europa Conference League for next season.

Karim Benzema will be impossible to replace

For nine seasons he was Cristiano Ronaldo’s brilliant side-kick and when the Portuguese left he took over goalscoring responsibilities and scored more than 20 goals in every subsequent season apart from this one when he scored 19.

Only Harry Kane combines goals and assists in quite the same way but he will take some persuading to turn down English options and move to Spain to fill Benzema’s boots.

Jose Bordalas ready for an Italian job

If Jose Mourinho leaves Roma then there is a similar type of coach waiting in the wings to take over.

Bordalas got Getafe into Europe in his first spell at the club and last season he got Valencia to the Spanish Cup final.

He left at the end of last season and was out of work until he answered Getafe’s call for help returning to the club with seven games left to save them.

Now Serie A could be his next destination.

Marco Asensio’s goodbye was typical of his time at Real

He came on as a substitute and then he was taken off again so he could receive an ovation from the Santiago Bernabeu.

Asensio scored 61 goals in 285 games and many of them were spectacular but a lack of consistency meant to often he was overlooked to start big games.

Now the challenge is to change that at PSG.

Eden Hazard reluctant to the last moment

It didn’t look like he was enjoying being thrown up in the air by team-mates on the final whistle.

He knows better than anyone that his four years at Madrid were a disaster.

Injuries were unkind to him at times and he never went past 15 starts in a season also never playing in a Clasico.

Hazard will not be missed by supporters who, occasionally, forgot he was there.

Time for Athletic Bilbao to rethink policy

They won't of course. Whenever the fans are polled on this the overwhelming decision is that they maintain the rule restricting them to signing Basque players.

Athletic’s aim was to finish in Europe and they failed miserably, held back by the absence of a goalscoring centre forward.

Good luck to them maintaining tradition; when a centre forward finally emerges they will enjoy him even more but next season there will be no European football for Ernesto Valverde’s side.
