Barcelona has seen numerous changes over the past 5 seasons. The departure of key figures like Xavi, Iniesta and Alves led the team to evolve and as such the style of play. Players such as Rakitic and Roberto stepped up to feel big shoes. And then the Neymar saga coupled with the departure of Enrique. The two legged supacopa demolishing by Real Madrid summarized our lack of bite up front and what has been Barcelona's Achilles heel for a long time: defensive woes.
Then came Valverde, to bear the headache and turmoils of a focusless playing body even with the GOAT. He built the team from the back, creating an almost impervious defense which outperformed expectations; bar the Roma capitulation. By so doing, won a treble with a robust 442 formation. The same fiasco has happened this season with players such as Busquest and Suarez misfiring on more occasions than not. Class they say is permanent and these two are currently riding on just that. Suarez for instance misses almost every easy chance and pop up with stunners when we least expected. But the need to be converting every chance.
Moving forward, the already acquired De jong should be inline to take Busquest's place as a holding midfielder. His ability to press will couple well with Arthur's possession based style of play. This will provide the midfield security needed to deploy Coutinho in the middle of the pitch bridging the gap between attack and defense instead of the Neymar role he has so miserable performed. This will give room for Messi to roam adequately without clashing with Coutinho as frequently seen.
A rotation set of Alena for Coutinho, Arturo for DeJong and Rakitic for Arthur will complement the midfield with Busquest given sporadic appearances to wilt as Iniesta was.
Midfield dominance has been Barcelona's blueprint for ages. And rekindling that football that Cules have grown to love will be appreciated 10 times over even when losses come rather than winning the champions league like we almost did this season.
