Sergio Canales’ future has been the subject of growing speculation, particularly around whether the Spanish midfielder plans to return home once his contract with Monterrey expires. That question followed him back to Spain this week, where he was honored by Real Betis and asked directly about a possible reunion with the club.
What did Canales say about leaving Monterrey?
Canales was present at La Cartuja Stadium for a tribute organized by Real Betis, the club he represented for five seasons. Taking advantage of his vacation from Liga MX, the Cantabria native visited his former team and received a warm ovation ahead of Betis’ match against Getafe.
Amid the emotion of the moment, Canales was asked whether he could see himself returning to the green-and-white side in the future. His response was measured and clear.
“Right now I’m under contract and I’m doing very well there in Monterrey, so that’s where things stand,” Canales told DAZN.
Betis still close to Canales’ heart
While shutting down immediate talk of a return, Canales did not hide the affection he still feels for Betis.
“Anyone who has played for Betis and then leaves always carries something with them,” he said. “I have an enormous affection for the club. No matter what I say, my gratitude will always fall short.”
When does Canales’ Rayados contract expire?
Canales joined Monterrey in the summer of 2023 and has quickly become one of the club’s key figures. He is now a team captain and has shown a scoring touch rarely seen during his time in Spain. The midfielder has already scored 43 goals for Rayados, making Monterrey the club where he has found the net most often in his career.
His current contract runs through the summer of 2026. Monterrey’s sporting president, José Antonio Noriega, has also confirmed the existence of an automatic one-year extension clause tied to performance, which the club expects to trigger.
Rumors persist in Spain
Despite Canales’ comments, speculation continues back in Spain about a future return. Interestingly, the rumors do not center on Betis, but on Racing de Santander, the club where Canales came through the academy and which is currently pushing for promotion to LaLiga.
For now, however, Canales appears settled in Mexico, content with his role in Monterrey and focused on honoring the contract he has in hand.
