Former Real Madrid, Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain defender Sergio Ramos has come out in defence of the women’s team after Spain’s defeat to Brazil in the Olympic semi-finals in France.
La Roja lost 4-2 to Brazil and while they kept fighting until the end, were dismantled by Canarinha. They gave them a helping hand on the way though too, with goalkeeper Cata Coll and Oihane Hernandez making several poor errors, which led to Coll apologising in tears after the game to the media.
There has been plenty of criticism aimed at the Spain side, who came into the tournament as reigning World Cup and Nations League champions, making history in the process. Coach Montse Tome has also been targeted, with Alexia Putella being left on the bench until the 77th minute.
A World Cup-winner himself, Ramos has come out in defence of his compatriots, tweeting out the following, and tagging the entire squad in it.
“A World Cup, a Nations League and a style of play comparable to few others… It’s been 24 hours since the defeat and the only thing I can say is that, with or without a medal, we are proud of you.”
Spain will still have a shot at the Bronze medal as they take on Germany on Friday, hoping to wipe the slate clean from their performance on Tuesday. France take on Brazil in the final for the gold medal, but for several Spain legends such as Putellas, Jenni Hermoso and Irene Paredes, it is likely their last chance at a medal.

Yes, I saw her stupid mistake. Why must she play the ball at the opponent when she could direct it away from her?
