Serie A and B are suspended until April 3 due to the Coronavirus outbreak, so there are several alternatives to consider for what happens next.
A Government decree announced by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte this evening confirmed the ‘red zone’ would be expanded to cover all of Italy, effectively putting it into lockdown.
People can only travel for emergencies or unavoidable work commitments.
The order also includes the suspension of all sporting events in Italy, including Serie A and Serie B.
With Euro 2020 set to begin in Rome with Italy-Turkey on June 12, it’s going to be nigh-on impossible to get the season finished before then.
According to La Repubblica newspaper, there are three options open to the Lega Serie A in these circumstances.
Postponing Euro 2020 would seem to be more likely if the virus continues to spread throughout Europe, as there was another significant spike in cases in Spain today.
It could be put back to the Autumn, or even to next year.
Another alternative would be putting together a crammed fixture list for the final month with a game every two to three days, postponing the Coppa Italia entirely until June or August.
The worst case scenario would see the season end here, so the FIGC would not assign a Scudetto at all, only European places.
When it came to relegation, the clubs would be protected, so promote the top two in Serie B (without additional promotion play-offs) and increase Serie A to 22 teams.
