Shaw sends message to Malacia after taking his place in Manchester United team

Luke Shaw has welcomed the competition that has been generated for the left-back spot in Manchester United's team by summer signing Tyrell Malacia.

Netherlands international Malacia started the first two games of the season on the bench for United but after an encouraging cameo in the second half of the drubbing by Brentford in August, usurped Shaw in the team for the following five league matches.

However, he struggled to deal with the threat of Manchester City's Phil Foden in the first half of the derby earlier this month, and was replaced by Shaw at half-time. Shaw has started in each of United's four league matches since.

The duo have created a good sense of competition between themselves and Shaw talked up the importance of that, as well as detailing the relationship they have developed off the pitch.

Speaking to club media, Shaw said: "It's about keeping fit and keeping that high level consistently. Tyrell has obviously been playing as well and playing really well, and I think that's really good, for the manager to have competition in different positions, and both of us performing at a good level.

"I really like Ty; I sit next to him in the changing room and he's a really nice guy and an extremely good player. He's still very young and we get on really well and, for both of us, it's nice to get on well with someone who is in your position. That really helps because, when he plays, I want him to do the best for the team and I know he has the same feeling for me."
