Ahead of the Champions League match between Atlético Madrid and Manchester United, Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone was interviewed by Amazon Sports, where he discussed the team's progress this season, his relationship with Álvarez, and the confidence and pressure that come with managing his former club.
Diego, you've had a good start to the season. In your opinion, where have you made the most progress compared to last season?
Simeone: The team is more balanced overall.
After a difficult summer, how did you help Álvarez feel like an important part of the team again?
I talked to him a lot, focusing more on him as a person than just as a player. To be honest, we have a very good relationship, which makes him very happy now.
Now, let's talk about Manchester United. You can probably understand how Carrick feels, because you also played for the club you now manage. Does this special connection give you more strength or more pressure?
At first, it gives you more confidence because you understand the club's situation, what the fans feel and need, and what the club requires. However, over time—I've now been coaching here for 15 years—because we have achieved so much in the past, there is more pressure now. Of course, everyone always wants more.
Thank you very much, and good luck, Diego.
Thank you.
