Simeone: We have set a high standard, now we must surpass ourselves

Ahead of the Madrid derby, Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone spoke to DAZN about the team's continuously improving standards in recent years, their performance last season, and their pursuit of the title in the new season.

You seemed very calm at the press conference a few days ago. How are you feeling today?

I'm very happy. After so many years at Atletico Madrid, I can still enjoy such an incredibly important match. To be honest, I'm very grateful for this, and I'm thankful to all the players who have stood by me throughout these years. Even today, I still have the opportunity to enjoy such a significant game on a Sunday.

Every season brings more responsibility. Ultimately, we have raised our standards to a very high level, so now we are competing against ourselves. Sometimes, the hardest thing in life is precisely competing against yourself. What we are doing now is constantly challenging ourselves to do better than in the past.

We know that last season was a very good season. Although we ultimately did not win any titles, and winning titles is our goal, that doesn't change anything. If we want to go further than last season, the next step is to win a title. We hope God will be on our side and help us take that final step.
