Diego Simeone was left frustrated by Atletico Madrid's failure to hold onto control as they fell to a 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid in LaLiga on Sunday.
Atletico had taken the lead through Ademola Lookman, but Madrid fought back in the first 10 minutes of the second half, with Vinicius Junior and Federico Valverde flipping the script.
Nahuel Molina pulled Atleti back level before Vinicius scored the winner, but Simeone's side failed to capitalise after Valverde's red card and could not get a result.
They had a potential penalty shout involving Marcos Llorente that was not given, but Simeone refused the idea that it influenced the outcome of the match.
"I don't think that's the reason we didn't win," Simeone said.
"We had the chance to capitalise on the good opportunities we created, but we weren't able to take that final step and win a game that we at least deserved a little more.
"I'm not getting into [the refereeing decisions]. I don't think it interfered with the match; we could have done more. We had the match to control better at 0-1, to do more offensively.
"It would have helped us with what was coming up. We have tough opponents; anything you give them is going to hurt you.
"We needed to control the game better, create more dangerous chances, and we weren't able to put what I'm talking about into practice."
Lookman is the eighth Atletico player to score in his first LaLiga derby against Madrid in the 21st century, and the first since Luciano Vietto in October 2015.
He scored with his only shot on target but contributed a team-high 0.4 expected goals (xG) to Atletico's total of 1.0, and Simeone is thrilled with how he is settling into the team.
"He has been growing, working very well, giving us different things in attack, and we need him in that way, helping to grow in the defensive part, so that he can help us, because he has it," Simeone added.
"With a huge heart and a willingness to learn and try to improve, he is very good, and I hope he continues to give us important things as he gave us [against Madrid]."

Sorlot thought that he would score again as he used to. when you succeed to beat Rudiger twice, it is the highest and last.

all our center defenders along with the goal keeper were all poor in performance during our loss to real Madrid, but anyway that's football
