FIFA's latest tournament, the Under-15 World Cup & Festival, has been playing out in Baku, Azerbaijan over the last week and concludes today.
After more than 900 games featuring around 3,000 children from 189 member associations, the winners of FIFA’s inaugural Under-15 World Cup & Festival are crowned in Azerbaijan tonight.
It has been a busy week at the Hovsan Competition Complex, a purpose-built facility around 30 minutes from Baku's Old City, with more than a few of football's biggest and most influential figures in attendance.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has dashed between matches and meetings in the tournament's VIP area while Arsene Wenger, FIFA's chief of global football development who devised the new competition, has been highly visible, often standing between the two dugouts during games with his technical team.
Lassana Diarra, the former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder, was there on behalf of the Qatar Football Association, while Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroonian Football Federation and ardent supporter of Infantino, was also present.
The eight-a-side tournament has also been attended by scouts from Manchester United, the only Premier League side to make the trip, as well as from leading clubs in Portugal and Germany, all looking to spot the future stars of football
