According to Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish men's and women's national football teams were awarded the Grand Cross of the Royal Order of Sports Merit on Tuesday.

Elma Saiz, the spokesperson for the Spanish government, announced that the decision was conveyed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, and proposed by the Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, Milagros Tolón.

Saiz stated that this recognition "is an affirmation of an achievement that undoubtedly transcends sports itself, and also conveys values such as perseverance, effort, sacrifice, cooperation, respect, inclusion, and talent to society as a whole."

She also said: "Spain has once again made history, becoming the only country in the world where both the men's and women's national teams have won the FIFA World Cup. Our country has become an international benchmark both on and off the field." She also mentioned Spain's victory over England in Sydney in 2023 to win the FIFA World Cup.

At the press conference after the cabinet meeting, the Spanish government spokesperson stood beside a sign that read "Values of Spain." She described Spain's performance in last Sunday's FIFA World Cup final as "excellent," with the team defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time in New York, with Ferran Torres scoring the winning goal.

She said: "The 'Values of Spain' can be seen here today. I think there are not many words that are more fitting than these values that our national team has brought to this FIFA World Cup. Yesterday, along with millions of Spanish people, we watched the match on the streets of Madrid or at home, witnessing and welcoming this team, and expressing our gratitude to them."

Saiz believes that in this FIFA World Cup held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the Spanish team "showed the world the value of teamwork, demonstrating immense talent, especially team spirit and cooperation. This way of playing transcends sports and also embodies the values that represent our country."

She concluded by saying: "An open, diverse Spain is leading a clean and sustainable energy transition. A Spain that attracts tourists and exports talent through culture. Spain is a country with values, and this group of players is the best example. Thank you for making us dream again, thank you for never giving up, and thank you for proving that talent always pays off. Congratulations, champions."
