Spanish Super Cup in ticket sale farce as less than 9% of total seats sold

The four Spanish clubs involved in the revamped Super Cup tournament in Saudi Arabia have sold less than NINE per cent of available tickets, it has been revealed.

Paltry ticket sales are threatening to derail the tournament, which is taking place in the Middle East this week for the first time ever.

A report in El Mundo on Monday has revealed that Valencia have sold just 26 tickets to their fans for their semi-final clash with Real Madrid, while only 50 tickets have been sold to Atletico Madrid fans for their match with Barcelona.

Spain's big two have fared slightly better with Real Madrid getting rid of 700 tickets, while Barcelona have sold 300.

Overall, that amounts to less than nine per cent of tickets being sold, with fans proving unwilling to shell out for a trip that is likely to cost around £1000.

Flights to Saudi Arabia are currently on sale for around £500 return, and with accommodation, tickets and spending money added on, the trip would be approaching four figures.

Atletico Madrid have already revealed that they will be paying for their 50 fans' match tickets, while also promising them free tickets to the final should they down Barcelona and make it that far.

Diego Simeone's team face their La Liga rivals in Jeddah on January 9, 24 hours after Real Madrid take on Valencia.

The final will then take place on January 12, also at the 62,000-capacity King Abdullah Sports City stadium
