Spanish press continue to cast doubt over Lionel Messi's Barcelona future

The Spanish press have continued their focus on Lionel Messi's future at Barcelona on Wednesday with Marca's front page saying he has the club 'in suspense'.

Messi's future has been called into question in recent months as he grows increasingly frustrated by the way the club is being run. The embarrassing defeat by Bayern Munich has only increased talk he could be on his way out.

Ronald Koeman will be appointed as manager after Quique Setien was sacked and it remains to be seen if a new boss and an overhaul of the first-team squad can convince Messi to stay put.

Marca claim Messi is now 'seriously pondering his future' and the Argentine is 'closely following' the moves the club are making to halt their crisis.

They believe there are three scenarios for Messi's future. The first is to leave the club this summer, the second is to leave when his contract expires next summer and the third is to stay and sign a new contract for a further two years.

Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are both interested in signing him this summer and they both reportedly appeal to Messi because they can challenge for trophies immediately.

At City he would also be reunited with Pep Guardiola, his former manager at Barcelona, and play alongside close friend Sergio Aguero.

The other major papers in Spain focus their coverage on Koeman's impending arrival at the Nou Camp.

The former Everton and Southampton manager is expected to be announced as Quique Setien's successor on Wednesday.

Mundo Deportivo report he will sign a two-year deal and wants to appoint Henrik Larsson as an assistant coach.

It is also claimed Barcelona will pay €5m (£4.5m) in compensation to the Dutch FA as Koeman prepares to tear up his contract with the national team.

SPORT's front page, meanwhile, simply reads 'Signed' with a picture of a smiling Koeman.

They also carry quotes from club president Josep Maria Bartomeu's interview on Tuesday night where he insisted Messi will be key to Koeman's project.

Eric Abidal's departure as technical secretary is also covered following the Frenchman's exit from the club on Tuesday.
