Stories of previous pre-seasons - Bayern's 9-1 defeat of Real Madrid in 1980

On July 27, 1980, Real Madrid began working through pre-season in Zeist, the Netherlands, under Vujadin Boskov with both Pirri and Miguel Angel linked with moves to Mexico just one week ahead of a dreaded meeting with Bayern Munich on August 5.

Los Blancos played their first game on August 1 against Go Ahead Eagles before leaving for Bavaria, where they'd take on a Bayern side further along in their preparations as their season was set to get underway just ten days later.

To worsen the existing fears, Miguel Angel, Vicente del Bosque and Juanito flew from the Netherlands to Madrid, as they were nursing injuries.

In front of 25,000 of their own fans, Bayern put on a show. The Germans raced into a 7-0 lead by half time, eventually winning 9-1.

"We couldn't touch our rival. There was no time for us to know where any of the Germans moved," Boskov said. "It was a black night. A debacle."

But, even despite the hammering, Boskov assured fans that he'd 'rather lose one game by nine goals than nine games by one goal'.

Madrid looked for their revenge on August 31 in the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy. Garcia Hernandez put them ahead, but the Germans levelled and won on penalties.
