Marc-Andre ter Stegen has tested negative for COVID-19, following two positive cases in the Germany squad ahead of their first match in World Cup qualification against Iceland on Wednesday night.

Marcel Halstenberg and Jonas Hofmann are in isolation after testing positive for coronavirus, but the rest of the squad and staff returned negative tests and, after careful consideration, the match will go ahead in Duisburg.

"The preparation for the match must carry on as planned," said Jens Gritter, the spokesperson for the German Football Federation.

The German authorities have made sure that all precautions have been taken for the match to be able to take place safely.

"This news is, of course, difficult to take so soon before the match, for the coach and for the whole team," said Oliver Bierhoff, ex-player and director of the German national team.

"But we feel ok about it because of the isolation [of the players], since we have carried out all the hygiene measures with great discipline until now."

Halstenberg and Hofmann are well and have no symptoms.
