The question marks over Christian Eriksen's playing career

Friday will mark exactly five months since we all watched on in stunned horror as Christian Eriksen collapsed to the turf during a European Championship match for Denmark against Finland, with the midfielder suffering a cardiac arrest, but there remain some unknowns over whether his career can continue.

In response to the incident, Eriksen was rushed to hospital in Copenhagen and had a defibrillator installed, which should prevent his heart slipping into cardiac arrest again.

There is somewhat of a debate around whether or not doctors will allow him to play for Inter with a defibrillator fitted, although the Italian law states not.

Since June 12, the Danish midfielder hasn't set foot on a football pitch or has he trained, very little is known about his day-to-day life with maximum confidentiality being given to the former Tottenham Hotspur playmaker.

He isn't allowed to train at any sporting facility due to the fact that requires a certificate of fitness that he can't be given whilst having the pacemaker installed.

What is his footballing future?

Eriksen will take a series of fitness tests in Denmark before the turn of the year and these results will then determine whether he can remove the defibrillator which is preventing him from continuing his career in Italy.

If this is a successful endeavour then he could conceivably continue with the Nerazzurri, but if the defibrillator is kept installed, he would need to leave.

In England and Scandinavian countries, the rules are different and he would be able to participate in professional sports with the defibrillator installed.

There has been talk of a possible return to Ajax, where he played from 2009 to 2013, and Daley Blind is currently a player with the Amsterdam club who plays with a defibrillator fitted after his own cardiac scare.

Eriksen, though, would need to accept a major pay-cut in order to re-join the Eredivisie club, whilst Inter would perhaps demand a transfer fee.

For the immediate future, the Italian champions are calm as they have had an excellent start to the season with Simone Inzaghi at the helm, and FIFA are paying the full salary of Eriksen for one calendar year.
