There is proposal to demolish the Camp Nou and build a new stadium from scratch

As part of his candidacy for Barcelona presidency, Agusti Benedito explained on Monday that if he wins the election on January 24 he will demolish the Camp Nou and build a new stadium from scratch.

Barcelona's current plans are to complete the Espai Barca rejuvenation project of the Camp Nou and the surrounding areas, yet Benedito doesn't believe this is the most efficient direction.

"One option is to knock down the Camp Nou and build a new ground right on the same site," Benedito explained.

"Whilst that happens we would play for three years at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys [in Montjuic].

"Our second plan is to play at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper."

When asked to explain his reasoning, Benedito made clear that he felt a complete rebuild was more cost-effective for Los Cules.

"The remodelling of the Camp Nou could cost more than the construction of an entirely new stadium," he confirmed.

"If we do it immediately, the project we're putting forward wouldn't cost more than 900 million euros.

"This would be financed by the sale of the stadium's naming rights for a period of 25 years."

Espai Barca had been long in the planning for the [Josep Maria] Bartomeu regime, yet Benedito believes the full facts were never detailed to fans and members.

"The uncertainties are incredible; the fans didn't know the adventure they entered when Espai Barca began," he declared.

"There are architects who say that the work would have been delayed for nine or ten years.

"This is a continuation of the plans I put forward in 2010 and 2015, with updates due to the changes in the club's situation."
