Spurs braced for unexpected transfer windfall amid Man Utd contact for £43m star

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has reportedly attracted some interest from Manchester United during the final few days of the summer transfer window

Manchester United have made initial contact over a transfer for Tottenham Hotspur star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, according to Sky Sports.

The 28-year-old, who is valued at €50million (£43million) by CIES Football Observatory, was previously part of the north London club's leadership group alongside Eric Dier, Hugo Lloris and the now departed Harry Kane. But new Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou decided to shake things up, naming Son Heung-min as his skipper with Cristian Romero and James Maddison as the two vice-captains.

When asked why Hojbjerg was not included as one of the squad's three main leaders, Postecoglou said: "He’s training well. I get that people want to read into that [decision], but if you want to change you have to change. You can’t keep doing everything the same and expect a different outcome.

"It’s pretty obvious. I’ve always done that wherever I’ve done. Unless I change things, personnel or staff, or manner of playing, then what am I doing? I’m definitely not that arrogant to think that just me walking in is going to give us success.”

But the former Celtic manager made sure to hail Hojbjerg's attitude, claiming that the experienced midfielder played an important role during the 2-0 victory against Manchester United a little over a week ago. "He trains really hard every day," the Australian said of Hojbjerg.

"I thought he played a really important role coming on for us against Man U, the other day. I haven’t seen that it’s diminished his role or that he’s not happy."
