UEFA confirms Ajax's 3rd goal vs Madrid is allowed by assistant referee

UEFA have confirmed that Ajax's third goal against Real Madrid is legitimate as assistant referee adjudged the ball had not fully crossed the touchline earlier.

Ajax beat Real Madrid 4-1 at Bernabeu to advance to Champions League quarter finals, but there was an incident of controversy, with Ajax's third goal having to be referred to VAR for what proved a lengthy period of at least two minutes after Dusan Tadic had fired past Thibaut Courtois and into the top corner of the net.

Prior to his strike, Noussair Mazraoui had hunted down the ball that was heading out of play by the touchline and stretched to nudge it back inside.

It was, however, an extremely tight call with it proving difficult to outright confirm if part of the ball had stayed in play or, indeed, rolled past the line.

Now, UEFA have provided additional information and elements that were taken into consideration by the VAR and referees in reaching the decison.

The statement reads:

There was no conclusive evidence that the ball would have been entirely out of play from all video angles and images that were carefully analysed by the VAR.

The assistant referee, who was perfectly positioned, had adjudged that the whole ball had not fully crossed the touchline. No on-field review was therefore required. Consequently, the referee was right not to intervene and to allow the goal.
