Uruguay underperformed in the first half of their World Cup group stage match against Saudi Arabia, which ended in a 1-1 draw, prompting self-criticism within the team. Uruguay captain Valverde admitted that the team lacked "patience" and failed to execute what they had "trained" for in preparation.
Valverde stated: "In the first half, we didn't play the way we had trained. This wasn't the result we wanted. I think we played with too much impatience, eager to overwhelm our opponent from the first minute. Perhaps we should have been more patient and played at our own tempo. In the second half, we improved significantly, the whole situation turned around, and everyone's mentality was completely different. We increased our high press and attacking pressure, and that was thanks to the support of all the fans."
A few minutes later, the Real Madrid midfielder, in another interview, emphasized that the team must conduct a "deep self-criticism of the first half's performance," while also needing to "retain the excellent play of the second half" and "double down on training" to ensure such a poor start does not happen again in upcoming matches.
