Aston Villa fans believe Emiliano Martinez is set to leave the club this summer after the Argentine appeared to be in tears following the team's last home game of the season against Tottenham. The goalkeeper was seen looking emotional after the 2-0 win over Spurs as he applauded the supporters.

And some fans have theorised he was saying goodbye to the home support amid links to Saudi Pro League clubs.

Martinez had tears in his eyes after acknowledging the fans after what was Villa's final home match of the season, leading to speculation on social media.

After seeing the emotional scenes, one fan wrote: "It’s the greatest shame that Emi Martinez is obviously going to Saudi at the end of the season. Burst out crying once he was clapped the fans. It’s been a privilege and an honour and I hope he somehow doesn’t leave. The worlds Number 1!

A second supporter said: "Replacing Emi Martinez would be a massive task if he is leaving. The best GK I’ve ever seen play for the Villa & it’s not even close."

Another added: "Emi Martínez is my favourite Villa player ever. Only James Chester comes remotely close. The man has embodied everything I want in an Aston Villa player. I beg this is not the end."

Villa are reportedly ready to sell Martinez, having established good contacts with the Saudi Pro League after offloading Jhon Duran to Al-Nassr in January.

Espanyol's Joan Garcia has been linked with a move to Villa Park as a possible replacement, but Arsenal are also believed to be in the race.

Martinez has not shied away from controversy during his time at in the game. He infuriated France by mocking Kylian Mbappe after Argentina's 2022 World Cup win and wound up PSG fans over the incident when Villa travelled for their Champions League clash in Paris this season.

The veteran keeper wore a cap referencing France's defeat to Argentina, but his boss Unai Emery backed him after the fallout from the French press.

"He is mature," he said. "He is responsible. He is getting better at controlling his emotions. I was working with him in Arsenal as well, before I arrived here in Aston Villa.

"I think compared with when he arrived at Aston Villa five years ago and now, he is a different Emiliano. I think he is more mature. He is a better player, a better goalkeeper and now my conversation with him is always the same. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world - he got the award for it here in Paris."
