Villarreal secure vital victory as Girona's dire home form continues

Down at the bottom of LaLiga Santander, Villarreal beat Girona 1-0 in a crucial match at the Estadi Montilivi as the Yellow Submarine climbed up to 15th in the table, two points above the bottom three and one behind the Catalans in 14th.

Girona have been abysmal at home in LaLiga Santander this season, winning just twice, and their last win in front of their own supporters came back on October 27. By the time their next home game comes around, against Sevilla on April 28, it will have been six months since the fans at Montilivi witnessed a victory. On Sunday evening, they left the stadium feeling disappointed and there is no doubt that they are in the relegation battle.

The only goal of the game came through Samu Chukwueze in the 7th minute. Pablo Fornals played a pass in behind the Girona defence and Chukwueze was the calmest man in the stadium as he carried the ball towards the area before guiding a left-footed shot into the bottom corner of Bono's goal.

Girona's supporters celebrated an equaliser almost 10 minutes later, yet VAR spoiled the party. Portu drove forward and played a delicate pass for Patrick Roberts to run onto, with the Manchester City loanee pulling the ball back for Cristhian Stuani to tap into the empty net. However, the goal was disallowed as Roberts was ever so slightly offside.

The battle to avoid relegation looks set to go down to the final weeks of the season. Huesca are bottom on 25 points, Rayo Vallecano are 19th on 27, Real Valladolid complete the bottom three with 31, whilst there are two points separating Celta Vigo, Levante, Villarreal and Girona from 17th to 14th. There will likely be a few surprises yet, but it is a seven-team battle to avoid dropping down to LaLiga 1|2|3.
