The future of Vinícius Júnior remains up in the air but the new Real Madrid head coach has made his thoughts on the matter clear.
It’s been less than two weeks since Álvaro Arbeloa was named the successor to Xabi Alonso but the new man is already getting the best out of Vinícius. The Brazilian provided three assists and a goal in the midweek victory over Monaco and now looks increasingly likely to extend his stay in Madrid.
The decision to replace Alonso with Arbeloa has been credited with improving the situation with Vinícius, who is locked in contract negotiations with the club. However, speaking to reporters on Friday, Arbeloa admitted that he would have little to do with the eventual decision.
“It’s not up to me, it’s a matter for the club and the player,” Arbeloa said. “Of course, I hope he continues to make history here.”
Arbeloa’s Real Madrid travel to Villarreal on Saturday, looking to keep the pressure on league-leading Barcelona.
When does Vinícius’ contract expire?
It is incredibly rare for a top player to leave Real Madrid during their peak years. But an elongated contract negotiation and a public falling-out with Alonso have sparked rumors that Vinícius could be nearing the exit.
His current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2027, meaning that he could agree a free transfer to a European rival in less than 12 months’ time. Still only 25 years old, Vinícius is one of the most coveted players in world soccer and Madrid will be desperate to keep him.
The Athletic reports that there is long-standing interest from Saudi Arabia, who could make Vinícius one of the best-paid players in world soccer. However it remains to be seen whether a player with genuine Ballon d’Or ambitions would make the move to a lesser league at this stage in his career.
For now, at least, Vinícius looks happy at Madrid again and appears to be thriving under Arbeloa. With Madrid set to advance in the Champions League and standing just one point adrift of Barcelona in LaLiga, there is still everything to play for this season.
