In recent years viewing figures of the English Premier League have been gradually declining as more and more people wake up to the fact that ‘the greatest league in the world’ rhetoric is wrong. That England is inferior to Spain in terms of quality has long been accepted, but the counter argument from English fans was that their league was more exciting.
6 Premier League titles in 7 seasons from super-rich Manchester City and a current title race that sees first separated from second by 12 points have helped to put paid to such arguments. Conversely, here in Spain we have a title race on our hands that could go right down to the wire – as it has in many recent campaigns.
In this article we take a look at the three main contenders for the title – we just don’t see Athletic making up the gap – and try to work out who will finish the season on top.
Hansi Flick’s side find themselves top of the table with a 4-point advantage over Real Madrid and have a host of sensational victories and results to look back on already. Not only have they hammered Real twice, but they’ve also made a habit of stunning late turnarounds.
The 4-2 comeback win away to Atleti and the amazing turnaround at Benfica in the Champions League standing out as perhaps the most impressive and exhilarating. Whilst there has been the odd defeat along the way, Barca haven’t really put a foot wrong since Christmas and are very well-placed to go and secure the title. For this reason, Megapari have Barca as the clear favourites, you can take advantage of betting promotions they list online and back them if you think Flick and his men have enough to get the job done. With the momentum they’re carrying and the squad looking sharper each week, it’s hard to argue against their credentials. Still, the title race is far from over, and any slip-up could bring Madrid right back into the picture
(Fighting spirit and goal-scoring have characterised Barcelona’s season so far.)
A home game against Real Madrid on the 11th of May and a final day trip to Bilbao to take on Athletic Club will most likely decide whether or not they do just that though.
There is something strange about Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid. For large parts of this season they have looked poor and, dare we say it, lucky? Yet somehow, they always manage to find a way to win and keep themselves in the running.
Unfortunately for Atleti, their luck seemed to have run out at the beginning of March in a devastating 12 day spell. On Tuesday 4th March they fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat away to Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie.
They then followed that up with a poor 2-1 loss away to Getafe in the league on the 9th of March. 3 days later they exited the Champions League after a more than controversial penalty shootout defeat to their cross city rivals.
Things got even worse though as on the Sunday they fell to a 4-2 home defeat to title rivals Barcelona despite leading 2-0 with 20 minutes left to play. They have recovered well though, with back to back wins against Sevilla & Valladolid.
Atletico’s best hopes are that both Real and Barcelona go deep in the Champions League and take their eyes of the ball in La Liga, but even then, 7 points still feels like a big gap to make up with just 7 games to go.
(This result rounded off a miserable 12 days for Athletico.)
We could take the first paragraph from the Atletico section above and almost copy and paste it in here as Real Madrid have been just as underwhelming for large parts of the season. The only difference however is that they appear to have been more lucky – both domestically and in Europe – but isn’t that always the Real Madrid way?
They never seem to look very good, but they always end the season parading the Champions League trophy around the capital! There have been relatively few games in which Carlo Ancelotti’s men have dominated the opposition and really put them to the sword, whereas there have been plenty of poor performances.
The 4-0 and 5-2 losses to Barcelona in La Liga and the Copa del Rey being the most obvious, as well as disappointing losses to Espanyol and Real Betis in the last three months. Yet Los Blancos only find themselves 4 points off Barcelona in second and could well finish the season as champions. Why?
Because they have the best and deepest squad in the league and they have the likes of Kylian Mbappe to rely on, who, even in his poorest moments has helped to single-handedly win points for his team.
(Despite being second in the table, Real Madrid have fallen to a number of poor defeats this season.)
