Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere admits he has been left 'surprised' after discovering Kieran Tierney is the fastest player at the club.

Free agent Wilshere has returned to his former team as an unregistered player as he looks to regain an element of fitness to continue his playing career, as well as build up a level of coaching experience.

But it appears he is still getting to know the full strengths and weaknesses of the Gunners stars he is working with, after being left surprised that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was not the quickest player in the squad.

'We were doing a sprint test today,' Wilshere explained, in quotes reported by Football London .

'I asked the fitness guy "who is the fastest player, is it Aubameyang?" and he said "no it's Kieran Tierney" – it surprised me.'

STATSports claimed on Twitter that Tierney's top speed is 23.3 miles-per-hour, and it's no surprise the left-back is renowned for his pace which has helped him become a regular at the Emirates as well as the Scottish national side.

Wilshere came through the Arsenal ranks before making his debut aged just 16 in 2008.

Although a fan favourite his next decade at the club saw his progress unfortunately heavily impacted by injuries before he left on a free transfer to join West Ham.

The 29-year-old has been a free agent since being released by Championship side Bournemouth at the end of last season.

Wilshere has recently been training with his former side and helping out their academy chief Per Mertesacker over the past month.

The midfielder though has told Sky Sports that he still feels he has something to prove in his playing career.

He said: 'At the moment I am doing my coaching badges and the club is helping me with them and I am helping some of the Academy kids out as well.

'It is certainly something I enjoy and maybe something to look at in the future but for now I still want to play.

'I feel like I still have a lot to give and something to prove which is why I don't want to finish playing now and start a coaching career just yet.'

'It's nice to be back seeing some old faces who I spent a lot of my life with Fitness-wise I am getting there and it's great to be back training with good players and the quality is only going to be beneficial for me moving forward.

'I'm there (at Arsenal) until January and there's no news on any clubs but hopefully something will come up then.'
