World Cup 2026 : Eduardo Camavinga faces major setback

Eduardo Camavinga endured a frustrating international break with the France national team, as he struggled for playing time and influence.

Used as a substitute against Brazil and limited to just 27 minutes against Colombia, the Real Madrid midfielder failed to convince Didier Deschamps.

The coach instead trusted Warren Zaïre-Emery and N’Golo Kanté, both of whom delivered strong performances. Deschamps even praised Kanté, stating: “There’s no question about his level. It allowed me to see younger players gain experience.” This growing competition highlights how much ground Camavinga has lost in midfield.

The situation has become increasingly worrying for the 23-year-old, who now appears far from being a first-choice option. Once seen as a natural successor in France’s midfield, he now sits lower in the pecking order, with players like Manu Koné expected to return and further complicate his position. His brief appearance against Colombia did little to reassure, as he committed several errors and received a yellow card. Meanwhile, his direct rivals continue to impress, making his path back into the starting lineup even more difficult.

This decline also reflects his current situation at Real Madrid, where inconsistency and injuries have slowed his progress. No longer a regular starter, he even faces competition from younger profiles within the squad. Despite his undeniable talent, Camavinga must quickly respond if he wants to secure a key role ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Otherwise, he risks remaining a secondary option both at club level and with Les Bleus, a scenario that seemed unthinkable just a few months ago.
