Rumours are circulating in Germany about a possible return of Xabi Alonso to the Bundesliga, this time to the Eintracht Frankfurt bench, which became vacant following Dino Toppmöller’s dismissal on Sunday.
According to Bild, the German club view the Spanish coach as a high-profile option, with sporting director Markus Krösche reportedly keen to meet him to explore a potential appointment. The reports come just days after Alonso was sacked as Real Madrid coach.
Toppmöller was dismissed after a 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen and a run of poor results. Having conceded 39 goals in 18 matches, Eintracht Frankfurt, currently seventh in the table, boast one of the worst defences in the Bundesliga, a key factor behind the board’s decision to change course.
According to Bild, the Hessian club, still competing in the Champions League, are also considering other candidates such as Edin Terzic, Marco Rose and Roger Schmidt. Even so, the priority at Deutsche Bank Park is to convince Xabi Alonso to return to Germany.
Despite the interest, however, a comeback to the Bundesliga appears unlikely. After his successful spell at Leverkusen, the World Cup winner attracted attention from clubs such as Bayern Munich and Liverpool before taking the Real Madrid job.
A move to Eintracht would not only require a significant financial outlay from the club, but could also be seen as a step backwards in Alonso’s career.
Everything suggests he will take his time and wait for an opportunity with another major European project. That said, Eintracht are expected to try everything to make their case.
