Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane personally intervened to stop Sergio Ramos from leaving the club.
The Los Blancos captain received a lucrative offer from China and wanted to leave the Bernabeu.
Then Ramos did a sudden U-turn and called an unexpected press-conference on Thursday announcing he wanted to retire at Madrid.
It turns out according to ESPN that Zidane played a major role in reducing the tension between Madrid president Florentino Perez and his skipper.
It is understood that the Madrid manager convinced the 33-year-old to stay for another season.
Zidane spoke to Perez where he made it clear that Ramos has a major role to play in the Madrid boss' new project.
It is believed the ex-France international had a similar conversation with Ramos and ensured the Madrid captain made peace with Perez.
Before Ramos' press conference, Perez confirmed the conversation he had with Ramos about the deal from China.
Speaking to Spanish Radio station Onda Cero, Perez said: 'I told Ramos that it was impossible for Real Madrid to let their captain go for free.
'They came to see me at the office and they told me that they had a very good offer from China but that the rules there do not allow them to pay the transfer.'
