The second era of Zinedine Zidane began on Wednesday morning when he took Real Madrid training for the first time since his return as coach.
Zidane got to work at Valdebebas, the scene of his shock resignation announcement on 31 May last year having guided Los Blancos to their third straight Champions League triumph.
Arriving at the training ground before any of his backroom staff and players, Zidane was there two hours before the session began.
Before training started, the coach gave a clear and concise speech to the Real Madrid squad and coaching staff that outlined the next steps for the team.
With the Frenchman back at the helm, Real Madrid can forget the past. Forget Julen Lopetegui, Santiago Solari and the disastrous week they recently endured.
Those who have been going through difficult times, like Isco and Marcelo, now have a clean slate and will have the chance to prove themselves in training and matches.
Real Madrid have three months of LaLiga Santander action to lay the foundations for next season and make sure they meet the minimum of qualifying for next year's Champions League.
The majority of the players have greeted the return of Zidane with a fair amount of relief after the struggles of this season.
There are exceptions, but most players feel comfortable with a charismatic and motivational character in charge once more.
The leaders of the squad, such as Sergio Ramos, Luka Modric and Karim Benzema, are fully behind the new head coach as they begin his second coming.

What I don't understand is why Zidane would want to come back. He was smart to leave, there's nothing left for him at Real.
and smart to come back

Zizou clap clap clap Zizou clap clap clap Zizou clap clap clap Let's remember that he retired in summer 2004 from international football, only to come back in summer 2005 to take France all the way to the World Cup Final, after France was in poor form during the WC qualification. Please Zizou, no headbutts during the Champions League final next season...

First season as a manager in which he will for sure not win the Champions League. Good timing for him as well - no pressure on the season and time to rebuilt.

I don't think he can ruin his legacy, granted he wants to continue coaching for some periods of his life. He can't ruin it at Madrid given what he's accomplished (though it's likely his teams will be whistled at some point), and if he were to return to coaching anyway at another club, there's far from a guarantee that he'd be successful there. This is a pretty good situation for him.

he's so young that we would assume that he'd be back at RM again. Same with Pep and Barca. He'll go back at some point imo.

Zidane "there is a big hole in the ship, I think it will sink unless we plug it" Flo "nah, let's just go around the ocean one more time and see if it holds" Zidane "Thanks for the seasono, but no thanks".

Zidane saw trouble coming and left. If he hadn't and the results were still poor, he would be the one getting fired right now instead of Solari. Don't pretend that the team would have stayed loyal to him.

Real Madrid is not most teams. Our managers have expectations of them, and Flo doesn't accept anything less than success. The media would've destroyed Zidane and tainted his entire legacy as a manager had he stayed this year. I'm glad he left. I'm not saying replace Ronaldo with Mbappe or something, but Flo atleast needed to get someone at the level of Icardi. Aubameyang and Lewandowski had also been begging to join us in recent years, and I still don't know why we didn't get Aubameyang when he left Dortmund.

I admire him as a footballer, but I don't think this is genius. And to me at least, I don't think this puts him in a very good light. When you have CR7, Varane, Kroos etc. at top level, you stay and collect all the glory, then when there're signs of impending problems, you're the first to jump the boat? The saying goes that rats are the first to jump ship. Seems like it's very applicable in this case.

I don't think he would've thought a second about leaving if he'd gotten permission to overhaul the team.

Wouldn't be surprised if he left because Flo wasn't addressing/wasn't going to address said weakness.

He knows when to leave and when to come back. Some of us predicted that he'd be back soon after a disaster.

Zidane was smart to walk away and let the team collapse from what he rightfully saw were severe weaknesses, now he gets to come back with the blank check he wanted. The guy is an utter genius. Amazigh genius.

Pretty crazy to think that if he stayed in his job he may have been the one getting the sack today.
