Ajax fans give De Jong heartfelt farewell after midfielder plays final home game

Thousands of Ajax supporters gave Frenkie de Jong a spine-tingling farewell after the midfielder played his final home game for the club on Sunday.

De Jong played the full 90 minutes as the his side all but secured a 26th Eredivisie title with a 4-1 victory over Utrecht at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

The 22-year-old will now join Barcelona in July after signing a five-year contract for a fee of £65m

And the Ajax fans got the chance to show their appreciation for his efforts for the club as they celebrated the crucial victory outside the stadium following Sunday's game.

De Jong was met with a roar as he looked out over the crowd, the supporters quickly going on to chant his name in unison.

The Dutchman responded by joining in, jumping up and down while waving an Ajax scarf as he did so.

De Jong joined Ajax four years ago at the age of 18 and has gone on to score five goals in 87 appearances for the senior side.

He has won Dutch Cup as well as reaching the final of the Europa League and semi-finals of the Champions League.

Ajax sit three points clear of PSV - whose goal difference is 14 lower - with their final game at De Graafschap on Wednesday.
