Allegri insists Juve's 'ugly' shock UCL exit against Villarreal is NOT a failure

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri claims labelling his side a 'failure' following their shock last-16 Champions League exit at the hands of Villarreal is unfair.

Gerard Moreno, Pau Torres and Arnaut Danjuma all scored in the final 15 minutes in Turin as Juventus unravelled in embarrassing fashion.

Unai Emery's side produced a defiant defensive show for most of the return leg after they had played out a 1-1 draw in Spain three weeks ago.

The Serie A giants consequently crashed out of the Champions League in the round of 16 for a third straight year, but Allegri insists 10 teams are currently better than his side on the continent, but said he would not have changed his tactics.

'I would play it the same way, as the lads did well for 65 minutes. At a certain point, Villarreal put everyone in defence and only an incident could break that deadlock,' Allegri told Amazon Prime Italia.

'We have to accept this defeat, it's ugly, but I cannot complain about the lads, as they played well.

'There are 10 teams in Europe that are on a better level than Juventus. It's not a shame, it's the reality. It's not fair to say that this is a failure.'

Allegri was pleased with his side's performance until conceding Moreno's 78th-minute spot kick, which he claimed 'changed everything'.

'In the second half, Villarreal decided to just defend in block but they had one chance and they took it,' Allegri added.

'We had good chances in the first half, fewer in the second because Villarreal started defending with 11 men, clearly trying to bring the game to extra time. Then that goal changed everything.

'We had our chances in the first half, they were aiming to either take this to extra time or make the most of incidents. We were naïve on the penalty, then rather than turning it around, we conceded another two goals and lost control of the match.'

Full-back Danilo, meanwhile, was crestfallen after the loss, stating: 'We must only apologise to our fans and continue working hard.'
