Real Madrid made the decision to dismiss Alvaro Benito from his position as a youth coach following Wednesday's Copa del Rey defeat to Barcelona, after the Spaniard had criticised some first-team players on Spanish radio, and he has made clear it came as a surprise to him.
He was back on the airwaves on Saturday ahead of the LaLiga Santander Clasico and was asked about his dismissal.
"I didn't expect it, I would never say anything to harm Real Madrid," he explained on Cadena SER.
"Anyone who knows me knows that I wouldn't, if I am critical then it doesn't go any further than that.
"It was hard to take because of the bond I have with the kids.
"I think it's unfair but I respect the decision, life goes on."
Benito has been on the receiving end of significant sympathy throughout the footballing world since the news broke on Thursday, something he is incredibly grateful for.
"I've been overwhelmed, I didn't expect so much goodwill," he said.
"That means that I'm going in the right direction.
"Life goes on and I hope the door isn't closed.
"I will continue to defend the club, but I will also continue talking about football."
