Analysis: What can Memphis Depay contribute to Barcelona's attack?

Following some outstanding performances at Euro 2020 with the Netherlands, Memphis Depay is set to join his new team Barcelona, for whom he signed this summer on a free transfer. Memphis scored two goals and registered two assists in the European Championship, where he showcased his skillset to those who haven't followed his career so far.

But what can Memphis contribute to Barcelona's attack? The MBP School of Coaches have analysed the main virtues of the former Lyon forward.

Analysis

The first aspect to take into account is Memphis' movement on the pitch and, specifically, his ability to get away from his marker and offer a pass option to the ball carrier. He is skilled at finding space between the lines, as seen in the image below.

Secondly, Memphis is also able to identify when there is a tactical imbalance in the opposition's defence and attack the space behind the centre-backs. As can be seen in the next image, Memphis can use his pace to dominate that space.

The Dutchman always prioritises the progression of the ball, whether in the form of a pass to the central lane, through an individual play or by passing the ball to the flanks. This aspect is closely related to the previously analysed point. By being able to receive the ball unmarked, Memphis has enough space and time to decide on the subsequent action.

Finally, the most vital virtue of a good striker is his finishing ability. Although Memphis is not a natural striker and has not had great goalscoring figures in his career, he has become increasingly talented when it comes to finishing, especially when orienting his body so that he can get a good shot.
