Arsenal have suffered their most recent setback in the winter transfer window after being unable to agree a loan deal with Juventus to bring in midfielder Arthur Melo.
The Gunners' technical director Edu was optimistic that a deal could have been wrapped up for Arthur, as Arsenal look to strengthen their squad ahead of the season run-in with Champions League football at stake.
But, as has been reported by the Athletic that the two clubs could not agree on the length of the loan.
Juventus were holding out for an 18-month agreement, whereas Mikel Arteta's side were only interested in loaning the player until summer before reassessing the situation.
The collapsed deal is the second time in a week Juventus have scuppered Arsenal's transfer market moves with target Dusan Vlahovic set to join the Bianconeri from Fiorentina.
Arsenal's hunt for recruits continues
Another target that Arsenal have shown an interest in bringing in was Lyon's Bruno Guimaraes, who now looks set to join Newcastle United in a big-money move to Tyneside.
News of the Arthur's move falling through will do little to reassure fans as the winter transfer window nears its end on January 31.
Arteta will have to act quickly in the market if they are to bring in players to add to the squad as they look to mount a challenge to finish in the top four.
In recent matches, the North London club have looked lacking in most areas due to ongoing injuries and suspensions, as well as high-profile fallings out; as happened with club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Who else are Arsenal linked with?
Aside from having registered interest in a number of midfielders, Arsenal are also rumoured to be tracking strikers to potentially replace Aubameyang.
The Gabon striker has received interest from Saudi club Al Nassr but has told his agent that he would prefer a move to Europe if he is to leave the Emirates for good.
As for his replacement, Arsenal have spent most of the transfer window trying to sign Fiorentina talisman Vlahovic. The Serbian striker has been in fine form during the current Serie A campaign but has agreed a move to Juventus.
Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Real Sociedad's Alexander Isak and Lille's Jonathan David have all been included on Arteta's shortlist, but time is running out for Arsenal to bring in someone during January.

The fact that the Arsenal board declined the deal hopefully showed that Edu and Arteta are not necessarily safe in their positions.

what’s wrong with an 18 month loan and option/obligation to buy if you want this player!?? sure only 6 month is less risky but many players need to adapt to epl so why judging after half a year!? i don’t understand this since we desperately need a midfielder.
