Inter Milan have had a £13million bid rejected for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, according to reports.

The Serie A giants are in the market for a new No 1 following the departure of Andre Onana, who joined Manchester United for £43m last week.

According to TyC Sports, Inter have made contact with Martinez's representatives although they have had a first offer rejected by Villa.

The report states they will return with an improved offer and are 'optimistic' a deal will be agreed for the Argentina international, with Unai Emery's side keen to 'get double' the first offer.

Chelsea are also said to be in the race for Martinez, as per the Mirror, as Mauricio Pochettino eyes a replacement for current first choice Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Martinez shot himself into global stardom last year with a series of decisive performances as Argentina won their first World Cup since 1986.

Having joined Villa from Arsenal three years ago, he has enjoyed a remarkable upturn in fortunes in his club career - an uptick that has no doubt fed into his national team career.

However, there have been signs this season that his relationship with Unai Emery, a former manager of his at Arsenal, has not been all rosy.

Following Martinez's lurid antics after Argentina's World Cup triumph, which saw him goad Kylian Mbappe after lifting the trophy, Emery appeared to suggest he was not an enormous admirer of his behaviour and said he would speak to him about his actions.

'When you have great emotions it is difficult to control,' Emery said at the time. 'I'll talk to him next week about some celebrations. I respect that he is with his team.

'When he is with us, under our responsibility, we will be able to talk to him.'

Martinez, who signed a new five-year contract last year, also threw doubts into his future at the club earlier this year, claiming he would like to win the Champions League but it 'will be difficult' to do so at Aston Villa.

'I have the feeling that today I have the level to play in the Champions League and try to win it,' he said.

'I would like to win a title with Aston Villa. You should never lose hope. I would like to [win the Champions League] with Aston Villa, but it will be difficult because the club is still in its growth phase.'
