Conte takes dig at Allegri amid criticism of busy schedule

Antonio Conte took a slight dig at AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri as both coaches criticised the busy fixture list.

Conte’s Napoli won 2-1 against Fiorentina on the weekend, but the victory was overshadowed by a knee injury to captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo, though he will not require surgery on a second-degree sprain.

The right-back was the latest to join the injury list, with the likes of Frank Anguissa, Kevin De Bruyne and David Neres already sidelined for the Serie A holders.

Ahead of Milan’s fixture against Bologna on Tuesday, Allegri said that a solution must be found regarding the schedule "for the good of football".

However, with the Rossoneri not competing in any European competitions this season, Conte could not understand why Allegri was complaining.

Speaking to reporters after winning the Panchina d’Oro award for best Serie A coach in 2024-25, Conte said: "I don’t know what Allegri said in his press conference. Surely this year, he is not playing that much."

And on the situation as a whole, he added: "I think we all agree. The problem is that it’s hard to speak out and take a position, because everyone talks, but then nobody does anything. That’s the truth.

"We’ll keep going like this, knowing that what I said is true anyway. There are institutions in charge of these matters.

"The German federation was taking a stance to do something, but it couldn’t act on its own, for example, as a group of coaches.

"As for the Serie A teams, those are situations that don’t concern me directly, but it’s a problem we all agree on, including the media, because too many matches are played and the risk is too high.

"But in the end, nothing is being done, that’s the truth."

Napoli did bolster their squad on Monday, signing Alisson Santos from Sporting CP.

The forward has joined on loan with an option to buy.
