Borussia Dortmund prevented Bayern Munich winning the DFL-Supercup for a fourth successive year, as Jadon Sancho starred in a 2-0 win.
Match Report
Jadon Sancho grabbed a goal and an assist to inspire Borussia Dortmund to a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich in the DFL-Supercup, ending Die Roten's recent dominance of the German season's curtain-raiser.
Lucien Favre's men looked the brighter and more imaginative of the two sides for much of the contest and their display – led by the excellent Sancho and Paco Alcacer – suggests the Bundesliga is set for another tight tussle at the top of the table.
Although Bayern survived Dortmund's lightning start, Alcacer finally opened the scoring in the 48th minute.
Match Events
1' CLOSE! Neuer denies Reus' effort
HUGE CHANCE! Dortmund nearly snatch the lead after just 60 seconds! A turnover in midfield is pounced upon by Guerreiro, who breaks forward for Dortmund with Bayern caught out. Guerreiro picks out a delightful pull-back for Reus in the centre, but Neuer impressively parries his first-time effort over the bar!
14' CHANCE! Alcacer misses an open goal!
INCHES WIDE! Neuer surges more than 40 yards off his line to try and beat Alcacer to a ball over the top, but the striker arrives first and immediately shoots for the gaping goal, but his effort drifts just beyond the far post!
23' Hitz stops Coman with decent save
Bayern are still looking for their first effort on target in the match, having yet to test Hitz. There's almost a lack of cohesion up top, despite there being no new faces in the side.
48' GOAL! Dortmund 1-0 Bayern (Alcacer)
Thiago gives the ball away to Sancho in midfield, and the Englishman Bursts forward, takes on a trio of defenders and picks out a terrific pass for Alcacer, who guides a first-time striker into the bottom corner from 18 yards!
58' Hitz makes brilliant double-save
HOW HAS THAT STAYED OUT?! Absolutely incredible. Kimmich's cross in from the right is met by Coman, who sees his header and rebound saved by Hitz at the near post! A second rebound comes for Lewandowski, but his effort from point-blank range is blocked brilliantly by Akanji!
69' GOAL! Dortmund 2-0 Bayern (Sancho)
WHAT A GOAL THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN! Absolutely sensational running from Kimmich who dribbles his way through the heart of the Dortmund side, through midfield and then beyond the defence, before rounding Hitz, but a soft touch just puts him off as he has to turn before shooting, allowing Toprak to recover and snuff it out!
77' Yellow Card! Kimmich booked
WHAT IS KIMMICH DOING?! Absolutely inexcusable from Kimmich, who blatantly stomps on the ankle of Sancho long after the ball had gone out of play, right in front of the Dortmund bench! How has he not been sent off for that?! It's only a yellow for the defender, who did not even attempt to disguise what he was trying to do there.

Dortmund barely had possession, but whenever they did, they looked better than Selena Gomez in a bikini.

Bayern Munich were the superior lot in the first half due to their philosophy of quick aggression and it helped them create a number of chances but they couldn't turn them into goals.Dortmund had a golden chance when Reus' fireball shot was blocked but other than that all Dortmund could do was to be defensive.Their defense is slowly becoming effective but it's not totally strengthened.Kudos to them for thwarting Munich's number of chances. The second half showed a surprise rejuvenation of Dortmund when first Alcacer scored and then Sancho who was simply brilliant.Dortmund's goalkeeper Hitz was sensational and played a major part especially in the first half.Lewandowski got a yellow card.Kimmich pulled a dirty stunt and deservedly got booked.Toprak and Akanji bravely defended for their lives to save what could have been Bayern's goal.Hence Borussia Dortmund are the winners of the German Super Cup 2019.Let's hope that they build a successive momentum onwards and aim for the Bundesliga title this season. P.S The crowd at Signal Iduna Park was overwhelming as always.
