Debutant Wesley struck the winner just after halftime.
Gasperini said afterwards: "I saw great focus and unity from everyone. We played well in the first half hour, against a strong opponent. After the goal, we had chances to close out the match. I'm satisfied; we played better than other times, with more precise positioning and maneuvers.
"When there's clarity, it's easier. Mistakes can happen in football, but we played well: with a high defence, against fast opponents. We did everything with precision and focus, and we did well in the build-up too.
"This team already has an identity, but we still need to improve on the details. For our first match, I'm very satisfied with everyone. We started well, which doesn't mean anything, but it gives us confidence.
"The stadium is beautiful, but this time the match was worthy of the setting. Today I tried to focus on the game without getting too emotional: I knew it would be difficult, but that's why I'm more satisfied now. What I have to earn, I have to do with my play. We managed to get off to a good start: it's a first step."
On Brighton loanee Evan Ferguson, Gasperini added: "Ferguson did well, he had a great game. He's improving in condition; he didn't play much last year, so it's natural that he needs some time to get used to it. He's shown some important qualities, he has a good potential: he'll give us satisfaction."
