Greenwood 'tells Man Utd he wants to return ASAP' but club won't rush decision

Manchester United have reportedly told Mason Greenwood he won't return to Old Trafford until next season at the earliest - despite the player wanting a swift return.

Greenwood is currently the subject of an internal investigation by officials at United, but it's not expected to be finished until the summer, according to the Daily Mail. Greenwood has been suspended by the club since January 2022.

The 21-year-old was arrested and charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, but the case has since been dropped and Greenwood will face no further action. Greenwood is under contract until 2025 with United, and he is said to be keen to return to the first team at Old Trafford, and has made his feelings clear to the club.

United are reportedly taking their time with the decision if Greenwood should return to the first team, with the final call having to come from the very top of United's hierarchy.

The decision will take in varying factors while there is also an acknowledgement that a return to the first team from Greenwood could disrupt United's current campaign.

The Mail reports that there is a split behind the scenes with some staff in the football department arguing he deserves to return to the fold, while commercial executives are more wary regarding the possible damage to the Red Devils' reputation.

Greenwood, who has been linked with moves to Turkey recently, has reportedly told club chiefs he is eager to return as soon as possible, while also stressing his commitment to United long-term.

Ten Hag hasn't commented on a potential return to the club for Greenwood. However, the Dutchman has reached out to Greenwood since the charges were dropped.

United said after the charges were dropped: "Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped.

“The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”

While Greenwood broke his silence: “I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support. There will be no further comment at this time.”

Daily Star Sport reached out to United for comment regarding the latest developments and the club denied any timescale has been set or communicated for Greenwood's return.
