This was a relegation dogfight as well as the Emilia-Romagna Derby, as they were both in the bottom four going into this weekend. The Ducali were in far worse condition, in penultimate place and having fired Fabio Liverani to bring back Roberto D’Aversa. The hosts were very active in the January transfer window and moved to three at the back, with Matteo Bani facing his former club and Bruno Alves returning from injury, but Graziano Pellè, Dennis Man and Joshua Zirkzee weren’t ready to start.

Bologna took the lead from a set play, as Nicola Sansone’s free kick found a cushioned Musa Barrow header at the far post, steering it back across the face of goal into the other top corner.

Takehiro Tomiyasu made the block on Juraj Kucka’s solo effort, then Lukasz Skorupski flew to palm away a ferocious Gaston Brugman strike.

Barrow completed his brace and doubled Bologna’s lead with a precise angled drive, after Roberto Soriano and Sansone had combined with slide-rule passes to send him clear.

Luigi Sepe smothered a Sansone free kick to prevent a third goal before half-time.
