Ian Wright reveals further racist abuse after talking about Black Lives Matter

Ian Wright has shared a series of pictures of disgusting messages of racist abuse he has received on Instagram before demanding social media sites take action.

The Match of the Day presenter and ITV pundit has highlighted previous abuse he has received, with a teenage boy handing himself into police after Wright shared messages online.

And on Friday, the 56-year-old former England striker took to his Twitter account to point out further racist slurs he had been sent in his messages on Instagram.

Along with the screen grabs, he posted: 'These aren't isolated incidents!!! It's daily!! This is what I received for posting and talking about #BlackLivesMatter yesterday.

'The abuse started a week earlier, the taunting is terrifying. Coming back and back again.'

He then retweeted a post from another member of the site who said: 'I'm sick and tired of Twitter and other social media platforms not taking enough responsibility for the hatred and racism that people have to deal with on a daily basis!'

Former Manchester City star Yaya Toure weighed in, writing: 'We will not stand for this.'

Wright hit out at the likes of Twitter and Instagram last month, calling for them to do more to deal with racism on the platforms.

Speaking to No Signal radio station last month, he said: 'There has to be some form of consequence.

'I've got a platform where I can reach people. This is happening to people on a daily basis where they can't do what I did - that's why I had to call this guy out.

'We're dealing with people that need to hide.

'Platforms like Instagram and Twitter are where they can hide but, what they haven't understood and what that guy will have realised today is, it's not my platform - it's everybody who has come in on him. Something has to be done.'

Wright had posted a message in support of the Black Lives Matters movement on his social media pages on Thursday.

It followed the Premier League backing the movement during their games this week – with players taking a knee on the first whistle and the names on the back of their shirts being replaced with the words 'Black Lives Matter'.

This was in protest at the killing of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in the United States.

Protests have been held across the United States and the globe in response to that death, with thousands turning out in London and cities in the United Kingdom to demonstrate.

Wright shared messages in May that also contained significant racist abuse. Wright was labelled a 'f***ing monkey', a 'n****r' and a 'cotton picking black c**n'.

In the rant last month, a user wrote: 'You are a c**n. I hate you. I hate your mom. I hate your dad. I hate your brothers and sisters. I hate all your family. You cotton picking black c**n'.

In another rant, the popular pundit was told: 'R9 Ronaldo will always be better than you, just know that. And he ended his career early with an injury. But will always be better than you. F***ing c**n.'

Wright was no stranger to racism during his time as a player and has spoken openly about his experiences in the Premier League.

In February, the Match of the Day pundit predicted that racism in football would never be full stopped, particularly with the growth in social media.

He told BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs: 'With the emergence of social media, you can see [racism] happening.

'I don't think it's something that's ever going to go away.

'People feel that if you've been a victim of it you've got the answers, but you don't know [what to do].

'You look at people who are accused of racism, they're older people - people who should know better.

'I still think that education is key and that's all we can do. But you're just hoping that more and more people will out it when it happens.

'Then you need the proper kind of discipline and punishment so that people understand that it's not acceptable.'
