Inter 1-1 Atalanta: Handanovic penalty save preserves point as leaders struggle

Lautaro Martinez gave Inter a fourth-minute lead against Atalanta at San Siro but the visitors were more than good value for their point.

Samir Handanovic's late penalty save rescued a point for Inter as the Serie A leaders laboured to a 1-1 draw against Atalanta at San Siro.

Lautaro Martinez combined wonderfully with strike partner Romelu Lukaku to score his 15th goal of the season in the fourth minute but Antonio Conte's side were then largely outplayed by a typically ambitious Atalanta.

Martinez was fortunate not to concede a spot-kick when he impeded Rafael Toloi towards the end of the first half, while substitute Ruslan Malinovskiy rattled the upright after the restart.

Robin Gosens poached a deserved equaliser 15 minutes from time and only Handanovic's heroics from Luis Muriel's 88th-minute effort from the spot denied Atalanta the victory.

Champions Juventus will go two points ahead of Inter at the summit if they win at Roma on Sunday.

Despite the shot drifting over the goalkeeper, Djimsiti manages to recover and nod it off the line at the last moment!

Bastoni confidently steps out of the back three before picking out the run of Candreva who cuts a cross back to Godin 25 yards from goal, where the defender rifles a low shot well wide.

Gomez whips in a free-kick into the six-yard box, where Toloi rises highest to power a header at goal that Handanovic spills straight back to Toloi who - under immense pressure from behind - manages to poke a desperate effort wide from close range! That could have easily been a penalty!

Malinovskiy hits the post seconds after coming on! Gomez has a throughball to Ilicic blocked, but the loose ball trickles towards Malinovskiy who whips a first time effort at goal from 25 yards that crashes against the outside of the post and away for a goal kick! What an entrance that would have been!

That had been coming, but eventually, the goal arrives in scruffy fashion. Ililic teases Bastoni on the right flank before clipping in a cross that takes two heavy deflections, causing it to drift to the back post where an unmarked Gosens nudges a faint volley into the bottom corner past a helpless Handanovic!

Handanovic saves the penalty! Muriel steps up confidently and hits a firm shot towards the bottom left corner, but Handanovic does brilliantly to spring to his right and push the spot-kick away from harm!
