Manchester United fans have gone wild for Cody Gakpo after the Netherlands forward scored his third goal at the World Cup against Qatar.
Gakpo was a target of United's in the summer with the forward having conversations with Erik ten Hag over a possible switch to Old Trafford. However, a transfer to the Reds was blocked by PSV Eindhoven who did not want to lose their star player so late in the summer transfer window.
While the 23-year-old has since admitted that the interest from United was a distraction, he has done his talking on the pitch in the Eredivisie. Gakpo scored 13 goals and grabbed 17 assists before the Dutch league was paused due to the start of the World Cup.
Having received the call-up from ex- United boss Louis van Gaal to join the Netherlands squad, Gakpo has so far continued his sparkling form on the biggest stage. He scored the Dutch's first against Senegal with a brilliant flicked header before firing his country into the lead vs Ecuador last Friday.
Now the forward has added yet another goal to his tally, this time against the host nation. Gakpo showed his strength and pace to avoid the challenges in Al Khor before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.
With another goal to his name, United fans were quick to sing Gakpo's praises on Twitter. Here is what they had to say.
Some concerns have been raised from Reds supporters that if Gakpo was to be the replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, he would not actually be a centre-forward but more of a winger instead. However, the 23-year-old has shown his flexibility in Qatar during the last two matches where he has featured in a striker role alongside Steven Bergwijn and Memphis Depay.
